Day 345 of 2025

Finally we got the last 16 calves in for their pre-weaning 'sort out'.
And in 4 days time I'll be just feeding the smallest four!

Day 344 of 2025

The brown chicken has been clucky and sitting on a nest for the past month.
She's trying to hatch one plastic (fake) egg.
Occasionally she gets off to feed.
She puts on a great display, telling the other hens to stay well away from her nest while she's off it!!
(Usually I put clucky hens in a 'naughty box' for 3 or 4 days and they stop being broody but I didn't this time for a variety of reasons. I wish I had a month ago but she's in it now!)

Picking the kids up after their school disco, I hoped I would get a photo.
I did, but not one of energetic children dancing but of Miss Lily showing me her cheerleading skills
in the playground. (Recognise the pose?!)

Day 330 of 2025

In order to keep the grass quality under control, at this time of the year, we usually 'top' each paddock after the cows have grazed it, cutting off all the seedheads.
As both tractors and both men were free, they shared the job on this paddock, making quick work of it.

Day 329 of 2025

The two big bulls resting it up.
They've been on holiday since January!
Little do they know that our Artificial Mating (with a technician) is coming to an end and in less than 24 hours they'll be with the cows, finishing up mating for us.

Day 308 of 2025

The calf shed is really emptying out now, as calving has finally finished!
(We had a false end to calving, when all the herd had calved, but then a cow labelled as empty and out the back took us by surprise and calved!)
These are the five youngest ones.
I'm still feeding calves out on the farm but as we wean more and more, those mob sizes are decreasing too :-)

Day 301 of 2025

This rather random looking photo represents such a lot....!
At 5am I was down the road rounding up a mob of calves that had got out of the neighbours during the night - getting them off the road before traffic started up was my main concern.
(They'd walked/run 4.5 kms!!)
At 6am, on my way back from said neighbours to let them know their calves were out but safe, I encountered their cows on the road - an open gate meant they were streaming out everywhere! More stock control needed to 'contain' them.
At 6.45am on my way back home, I encountered two more of their calves on the road, so walked them back to our yards.
Phew.
At 7.30am when feeding OUR calves my phone flipped out of my pocket into the paddock.
At 9.30am we had our annual Shed Inspection - lots of paper work and compliance involved. However all went well. Phew.
10.30am MOML and I were back in the calves' paddock looking for my phone.
YAAAY He found it - I was so relieved that I promised him scones for lunch.
We deserved that after the morning we had!!

Day 300 of 2025

George did really well on his wee trail bike.
He rode all the way out to the runoff and back, then to the back hills over the river.
(With Dad and sister behind him.)
Probably about 9kms altogether.
He was ready for a fluffy and cake by the time they'd finished!!

Day 299 of 2025

The milk from the new calvers is not keeping well at all now that the days are a lot warmer.
Lately I've made yoghurt, cottage cheese and mozzarella (!!!) when adding hot water to warm it up for the calves.
What the calves won't drink, the chickens definitely will!

Day 298 of 2025

My whiteboard in the calf shed is pretty full but Lily managed to find an empty spot to write up some (more) calf names - love the theme of this batch of names!
