Day 87 of 2020
A messy morning milking - each cow received a slow release Copper bullet.
They didin't appreciate being fussed with in the shed!
Related post *here*.
The above bullets are the five that were spat out, two we noticed straight away so those cows got a second one. Three will remain copper-less until next year.
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.

Day 84 of 2020
Sage saves the day!!
The two wild sheep mentioned yesterday were acquired by our son to graze his orchard.
There is no grass left so we said they may as well come to our orchard. It took a lot of cunning but son and hubby managed to get them on a trailer and into our orchard.
They stayed there approx 5 minutes before going through the fence and ending up in the cow paddock.
A big paddock.
Anyone who has dealt with sheep knows how hard they are to shift if they don't want to.
Enter Sage, a neighbour's dog.
She won a placing at Dog Trials over the weekend.
Within minutes she had them from one end of the paddock to the other, through the gate and back into the orchard.
The fences were mended yesterday and so far, they are still in it!
It was amazing to watch such a good dog in action!
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.

Day 82 of 2020
A chook went missing.
She has a history of going clucky so I hoped that was what she was up to, rather than meeting an untimely end somehow.
Finally when doing some weeding one day, I found her - as I was trying to pull an overgrown climbing plant off a bush, I heard very nervous clucking from below.
Deep in the depths of my overgrown garden, I found her and the nest!
As we don't have a rooster, sitting on a clutch of eggs is a total waste of time. Some breeds go clucky very readily, as this girl does. Usually she goes into the 'naughty cage' (an old guinea pig cage) for a few days. She loses her cluckiness quite quickly and goes back to laying.
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.

Day 72 of 2020
The last milking of the season for a handful of younger cows - ones that need a bit longer rest as they are starting to lose condition.
Last milking means a range of treatments - 'Dry Cow Therapy' (a long acting antibiotic into each teat if they've tested as needing it), or Teat Seal to keep the bugs out of their udder, plus a drench, and a Copper 'bullet'. (Northland is naturally short in Copper so the stock need one of these regularly.)
Then it's off for 5 months holiday (for them)!
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.

Day 70 of 2020
Many of our native trees have tiny little flowers/fruits which you don't even realise are there until you stumble across them.
This is the Kahikatea tree - our tallest forest tree (apparently!) and the berries, called Koroii, were once a highly valued food source. Amazing when you see how tiny they are!
We are so lucky with the number of native trees on our property. I really would like to try and get photos of them all.
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.
Day 69 of 2020
Whoops nearly forgot to post this!!
It was so dark first thing that I thought it would be a cool idea to get outside for a sunrise photo.
I decided I'd like to see what the sunrise looked like rising behind the far hills.
Which meant climbing to the top of the near hills first. Whew! No mean feat :-)
I decided to use this photo as you can see (just) the landscape here. Range of hills after range of hills.
We live in a valley between some of these hills.
See you tomorrow,
Raewyn.
